Helpful Quotes

But to connect the spring new moon with the day when the sun has returned to the equinox is a more difficult and complicated matter. The early Hebrews would seem to have solved the problem practically, by simply watching the progress of the growing grain. If at one new moon in spring time it appeared clear that some of the barley would be ready in a fortnight for the offering of the green ears at the feast of unleavened bread, then that was taken as beginning the new year. If it appeared doubtful if it would be ready, or certain that it would not be, then the next new moon was waited for. This method was sufficient in primitive times, and so long as the nation of Israel remained in its own land. In the long run, it gave an accurate value for the mean tropical year, and avoided all the astronomical difficulties of the question. It shows the early Hebrews as practical men, for the solution adopted was easy, simple and efficient. From the Book Astronomy and the Bible 1922 E.W Maunder.

The Sanhedrin closely watched the arrival of Abib. If the barley crop was not in a state ready for the wave offering the month was intercalated. This means the month of Adar II was added to the calendar, realigning the lunar year with the solar year. Unlike the present day traditional calculation for the reckoning of Adar II, the Sanhedrin reckoned it according to the signs of the seasons. This is documented in the Talmud where the author states: "in tractate Sanhedrin 11b letters are quoted which were sent out by Rabbi Simeon ben Gamaliel and Rabban Gamaliel II. Simeon, son of Gamaliel I and head of the Sanhedrin in the two decades before the destruction of the Temple, wrote as follows.

‘We beg to inform you that the doves are still tender and the lambs are still young, and the grain has not yet ripened. I have considered the matter and thought it advisable to add thirty days to the year" (Finegan 38).

From this we can see, even from the Talmud Tractate Sanhedrin 11b, that during the time of Yeshua the presence of ripe grain was the determining factor used to calculate the first of the biblical months.

Mark 4:27-29 "And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. (KJV)"

Biblical View

Nehemiah 13:6

2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

Nehemiah 8:1-18 1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.

This was the restoration of reading the Torah to the people; we read the Temple reading in a Triennial Cycle over Three years. Ezra started in Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets) the dedication of the Temple. They read the whole Torah!

We start at the beginning of the year in Nissan at Beresheet (Genisis) then read through.

Leap Year

As this doc. I begin here, Thursday, March 10, 2005

Biblical date: 29Adar I 5765

My assignment is to analyze it, and come to conclusion. "Well, according to the documented findings per the Karaite Korner Newsletter #194, stated on March 8, 2005, Aviv was found in Israel, at Alon Junction and Ein Mabua near Jerusalem. Was found by Aviv Searchers out as on a field trip to learn to look for in this search for Aviv. Immediately found was that the barley was in an advanced stage of ripening. According to their report, Aviv barley located east of Jerusalem, are enough to establish the coming of the Month of the Aviv, and in light of this discovery, the New Moon, Friday March 11, 2005, will be the beginning of the coming biblical year. Chag HaMatzot will be Saturday March 26, 2005. And Shavuot will be May 15, 2005. There were 11 people that witnessed the sighting of the Aviv near Jerusalem."

Abib

Abib (The Thirteenth Month/Leap Year): It indicates a stage in the development of the barley crop. It has 3 characteristics: (1) It is brittle enough to be destroyed by hail and has to lighten in color (it is not ‘dark’), (2) The seeds have produced enough dry material so it can e eaten parched, (3) It has developed enough so that it will be harvest ready 2-3 weeks later.

Conclusion

Here concluded for now the given Scriptures about this subject of Abib. I have taken from this doc. That was sent me, and recorded all the verses, plus some I had from a file/doc. I am making on my own called: “Feasts” and from the onset of Abib to the Feast day that leads to Shavuot. One leads to another as based on the Abib.

Seeing that the sighting are valid, and scriptural; then it will be accepted by us, Richard Green, Frank Bolton, Denise Marsden and Kathy Martonosi, that the New Moon Friday March 11, 2005 will start the New Year. This will start Pesach March 26, 2005.

Karaite Korner Newsletter #194 Aviv Found! On Tuesday March 8, 2005 Aviv was found in Israel at Alon Junction and Ein Mabua near Jerusalem. Large quantities of Aviv barley were found near Ein Mabua and smaller quantities near Alon Junction. Ein Mabua is located 15km east of Jerusalem. The Aviv examination on March 8, 2005 started out as a field trip to teach Aviv Searchers about what to look for during the main Aviv Search on Thursday-Friday March 10-11, 2005. During this preliminary examination we immediately found that the barley in the region was in an advanced stage of ripening. The main Aviv Search, which will cover the Northern Negev and Jordan Valley regions, will still be carried out on March May 15th starts Shavuot 10-11. However, the vast quantities of Aviv Barley already located east of Jerusalem are enough to establish the coming month as the Month of the Aviv. In light of this discovery, the New Moon on Friday March 11, 2005 will be the beginning of the coming biblical year. Chag HaMatzot (Feast of Unleavened Bread) will fall out on Saturday March 26, 2005 and Shav near Jerusalem

Shauot (Feast of Weeks) will fall out on May 15, 2005. The following people participated in the Aviv examination on March 8, 2005: Nehemia Gordon, Ruthanne Koch, Devorah Gordon, Glen Cain, Karl Bloodworth, Ferenc Illesy, Avi Marcus, Dina Marcus, Avi Gold, Terry Fehr, and Yosef Ruach.

Pictures of Aviv Barley fields found on Tuesday March 8, 2005 are posted at: Happy New Year! Nehemia Gordon

WE do not agree with the Karaite views on many topics, but on this one (Abib) we do until further information comes to light.

Please try not to judge others if they do or do not follow the Abib Barley Biblical Calendar. Its really about if you want First Century Believers Judaism. Others are more Rabbinical, sometimes it takes time people need more time. Its not about being right or biblical its about grace to obedience.
